A Ronkonkoma man has been indicted for allegedly driving nearly three times the legal speed limit, the wrong way on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day and crashing head-on into a car driven by a 30-year-old man, which resulted in him receiving serious injuries, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced.

Tasabbir Hossain, 32, was arraigned on Tuesday, March 17, on charges of aggravated vehicular assault, vehicular assault, vehicular assault, assault, aggravated driving while intoxicated per se, driving while intoxicated per se, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

He pleaded not guilty and bail was continued at $250,000 cash, $500,000 bond and $1.25 million partially secured bond. He is due back in court on April 20, and if convicted, faces up to seven to 15 years in prison.

On Jan. 1, at roughly 1:55 a.m., after leaving a New Year’s Eve party, Hossain, allegedly intoxicated, began driving his 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG westbound in the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, Donnelly said.

As he drove on the wrong side of the road, Hossain crashed head-on into a man’s 2015 Acura 4DSD driving eastbound on Sunrise Highway near Louden Avenue, DA said.

The man was taken to the hospital with serious physical injuries that required surgery, including a fractured arm, fractured knee and fractured ankle, Donnelly said.

Hossain was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for medical treatment and blood drawn at the hospital revealed he had a blood alcohol concentration of .23% approximately thirty minutes after the crash, Donnelly said.

“His reckless choice to drink and drive created an incredibly dangerous situation for his fellow drivers, and ultimately, put an innocent 30-year-old man in the hospital after Hossain crashed head-on into the victim’s vehicle,” Donnelly said after the indictment.
