Five schools across Long Island are reportedly under investigation or facing criticism after reports of racist comments and behavior toward students, electoral candidates, and parents in recent weeks.
In the face of tragedy, Asian Americans encounter skeptics about whether they in fact suffer at all. Asian Americans have difficulty persuading others despite the compelling evidence because we frame race in black and white terms, literally and figuratively.

Nassau County police are investigating as a hate crime the recent discovery of graffiti spray painted on a Mineola sidewalk that included swastikas, racial slurs and the phrase “Make America White Again.” The phrase is a play on Republican President-Elect Donald Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again.” The bias incident was reported at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday outside of a home on Washington Avenue near the corner of Elm Place two blocks from Mineola village hall.
According to police, the two suspects—a man and a woman—grew angry after they were denied “slushies” because the gas station wasn’t able to make the frozen beverages at that time. They became more enraged when a store clerk denied their use of an electronic food stamps card to purchase several other unidentified items.
