The following are trustee reports from the April 6 Floral Park village board meeting.
Community Development Block Grant Program
Trustee Tomecki said that she is once again very pleased to cast her vote in support of the Village of Floral Park’s participation in the Community Development Block Grant Program. As in the past years, public funds funneled through this program improve and expand the accessibility of Floral Park, ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to enjoy the facilities and share fully in the community. This year, as the recreation commissioner and the liaison to the Citizens with Disabilities Committee, Trustee Tomecki is pleased to report that the application for the Community Development Block Grant for the replacement of a handicap access ramp at the Floral Park pool was approved. The present ramp began to show signs of deterioration during the end of the 2009 summer season and it was identified by the Superintendent of Recreation as a structure in need of replacement to ensure complete access to the pool facilities. Thanks to the Village of Floral Park’s ongoing participation in the Community Development Block Grant Program, the replacement of the ramp will now be possible and, more importantly, it will come at no cost to our residents as it will be completely paid for by community development block grant monies. The new ramp, which is expected to be installed before the beginning of the 2010 summer season, will provide a safe entraceway for residents in wheelchairs, as well as moms, dads and grandparents who are pushing strollers.
Trustee Tomecki extended a special thank you to Nassau County Legislator Richard Nicolello, who helped lobby on the village’s behalf for the funding of this noteworthy project. Trustee Tomecki expressed her gratitude to Superintendent of Recreation Kurt Meyfohrt who helped secure bids for the project, and Deputy Village Clerk Susan Walsh who assembled the application that made this grant possible. Finally, Trustee Tomecki thanked the co-chairpersons of the Citizens With Disabilities Committee, Ginny Bonagura and Nadia Ortiz, who work closely with Trustee Tomecki in an effort to seek out opportunities to improve the accessibility of Floral Park.
On a motion by Trustee Rhatigan, seconded by Trustee Longobardi and carried unanimously, Deputy Mayor Tweedy recessed the meeting at 8:25 p.m.
