“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” topped the box office on Friday—and it wasn’t even close.
The “Apes” movie, starring James Franco, premiered with a bang on Friday, earning $19 million. The runner-up was “The Smurfs” which fell way behind, bringing in $5.9 million.
The sci-fi western thriller, “Cowboys & Aliens,” claimed third, earning $4.7 million.
Set in present day San Francisco, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” brings you through the journey of a man’s scientific experiment, where apes and humans clash in a war for supremacy.
On the popular movie website, Rotten Tomatoes, the average critic rating for Director Rupert Wyatt’s film was 80 percent, with moviegoers giving the movie an 87 percent score. A good sign for the film going into its second day in theaters.
Karina Mitchell of CBS said the movie, “ranks as one of the more entertaining and probably the most thought-provoking of the heavy hitters.” Twentieth Century Fox invested a $90 million budget on the film, with a 105 minute run time.
Also opening on Friday was Ryan Reynold’s and Jason Bateman’s new comedy “The Chage-Up” which earned $4.7 million. This isn’t good for Reynold’s who didn’t start the summer off well after his super hero movie “Green Lantern” suffered a disappointing showing in the box office with $114 million domestically as of Friday. The projected budget for “Green Lantern” was $200 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
“The Change-Up”–about a married father who changes bodies with his best friend–received a 20 percent rating from movie critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
