Walt Disney Pictures will be presenting a live action version of Sleeping Beauty’s villain, Maleficent, set to hit theaters March 14, 2014. The film will be directed by Robert Stromberg and is starring the always lovely and ever-so-talented Angelina Jolie.
The “Sleeping Beauty” tale is told from a different perspective. This time the evil nemesis of Princess Aurora, Maleficent’s side of the story will be revealed. It’s is a spin off from Disney’s 1959 “Sleeping Beauty.”
Jolie plans to show fans a different side of the evil fairy.
Before the details of the film were finalized, Jolie explained to MTV News’ Josh Horowitz that she would love to play the evil sorceress. “It’s all new and being discussed, but I loved her when I was a little girl. She was my favorite.”
It doesn’t come as a surprise that Maleficent was Jolie’s favorite.
“It’s not anti-princess,” Jolie told EW.com in a new interview. “But it’s the first time they’re looking at this epic woman… I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities.”
“What our challenge will be – and the script writer has already cracked it – is to not simplify it, not to just reverse the story but tell a bigger story that doesn’t point the finger [at Princess Aurora] either,” she teased speaking about the film’s premise.
Angie believes that Maleficent is a “good person” deep down.
As of now the crew of “Maleficent” is experimenting with which version of Maleficent Jolie will play. She’s not sure if she will stay true to the animated character that fans are familiar with. “But the horns are the horns – you can’t deny them,” she said. “You have to have horns.” Angelina certainly has hers.
