From the desk of Dr. Charles Murphy: April 12, 2012

The grades three through eight English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments will be given next week. In fact, the testing begins on Tuesday, April 17, a day after the students return from spring recess. The tests measure how well students have mastered the knowledge, skills and concepts incorporated in the New York State Learning Standards.

Parents are able to use the assessment information to gauge their child’s progress against students throughout New York State. Typically, the final student results are tabulated and returned to school districts in August. We try to mail out this information to parents as soon as possible, so parents are able to make educational plans for their children for upcoming school year.

In recent years, the State Education Department has “renormed” the student-scoring matrix to a new college readiness standard. As a result, the tests are much more challenging and will better prepare students for the rigors of higher education. If you have any questions about the upcoming state testing, please contact your child’s school.
