Actor Ryan O’Neal has gone from successfully fighting leukemia to another battle with cancer.

The 70-year-old actor’s representatives sent a statement to People, telling the magazine on Friday that he was recently diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer.

“Although I was shocked and stunned by the news, I feel fortunate that it was detected early and according to my extraordinary team of doctors the prognosis is positive for a full recovery,” he said in the statement.

O’Neal has a memoir about his life with Farrah Fawcett, his longtime girlfriend who died of cancer in 2009 at the age of 62, coming out on May 1. The book is reportedly titled: “Both of Us.”

While revealing his latest diagnosis, O’Neal also used the statement to urge the public to get regular check-ups, “as early detection is the best defense against this horrible disease that has afflicted so many.”

The Love Story star added: “I am deeply grateful for the support of my friends and family during this time.”

He is also known for his work in Paper Moon (1973), Barry Lyndon (1975) and Peyton Place (1964), according to IMDB.com

O’Neal’s daughter, Tatum, also starred in Paper Moon, which earned her an Academy Award for best supporting actress.

O’Neal, whose reality television show Rayn and Tatum: The O’Neals has been struggling on Oprah’s OWN Network, recently criticized the famed talk show host for starting her network too soon.

“I wish we had known that … she should have told us,” he said, according to TMZ.
