Picture 76The world — or Long Island at least — has been anticipating the release of the new “Great Gatsby” movie for months. This week, the first trailer for the movie hit the web, fueling anticipation for the movie that’s set to hit the big screen in December.

Set to Kanye West’s and Jay-Z’s No Church in the Wild, viewers meet the stars Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Gatsby, Carey Mulligan, who plays Daisy, and Tobey Maguire, who plays Nick. The movie is the latest adaptation of the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The trailer reveals little, though it gives viewers a glimpse into the lavish parties Gatsby is best known for throwing and the intense chemistry between Daisy, who’s married and a mother, and her longtime suitor, Gatsby.

The movie takes place in the roaring 1920s on the North Shore of LI and in New York City. It follows a midwesterner named Nick who returns from war to begin a new life in New York. He lands at a house on the Gold Coast, neighboring Gatsby, who was born poor.

As the story develops, Gatsby begins vying for the affection of Daisy, Nick’s cousin who’s from old money and has shot him down in the past. In an attempt to win her over, he buys a house across the lake from her and throws lavish parties in hopes that one day she will attend.

The book was first published in 1925 and became a hit after it was republished in the 1940s.  The movie comes as the seventh inspired by the book. Other adaptations in the past included an opera, computer games and radio broadcast.
