The weekend of July 14 and 15 was a dream come true for those working to create an art community in Oyster Bay. Rob Zeller of the Teaching Studios of Art of Oyster Bay held his plein air art show and awarded prizes to the winning artists in his new gallery in the Arts Space at The Rodger’s Building at 120 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay. He had an amazing assemblage of paintings of Sagamore Hill created by artists from across the country.
There is something very special about the art created at the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. It is landscape painting at its best.
The exhibition will remain up for one month, until Tuesday, August 14. The gallery hours are Monday to Thursday, July 16 to Aug. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, please contact Rob Zeller at 558-7367.
On Sunday, July 15 the new exhibit Witness Trees, the Oyster Bay Historical Society’s summer exhibition, in partnership with Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (SHNHS) opened. SHNHS Superintendent Thomas Ross was very happy to see the works created by Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) students using wood reclaimed from trees on four National Historic Sites, including Sagamore Hill, the George Washington Birthplace, the Fredrick Law Olmsted Homestead and the Hampton National Historic Site. He said of the traveling National Park Service (NPS) show, that its being shown here was a demonstration of the partnership between the NPS and the Oyster Bay Historical Society (OBHS). He said, “This great partnership adds to the emerging art scene here in Oyster Bay. We look forward to more collaboration in the future. I encourage people to come and see the show, it not only displays amazing wood craftsmanship from one of the best design schools in the country but it also gives the public an opportunity to lean more about our nation’s history through our exhibits of their work.
“The NPS is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2016 and one of the initiatives is to promote the arts through a unit called Art Afire. Exhibits like this and the plein art contest at Sagamore Hill the last two days, were an example of the way Sagamore Hill is promoting the arts.”
