Genealogy At Great Neck Temple

geneaOn Sunday, Feb. 2, Temple Beth-El of Great Neck will welcome Nolan Altman, president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Long Island and vice president of JewishGen.org.

Altman will discuss the methods, tools, and resources available to those who wish to research and rediscover their immigrant ancestors’ history from their arrival to the United States as well as back to the “old country.” Altman will also discuss resources available to assist those trying to find information on family members that did not come to America and who may have been lost during the Holocaust. Using actual historical documents and photos from his family history as a guide, Altman will provide participants with step by step basic information needed to start researching their own family tree.

Altman currently coordinates JewishGen’s Holocaust Database and JewishGen’s Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR). He works with volunteers from around the world helping to grow both databases for the benefit of family members and researchers. He has presented his “A Tale of Two Families, How to Document and Research Your Family History” seminar at the university level and to numerous adult education classes.

Temple Beth-El’s Brotherhood will be serving a bagel and lox breakfast at 9 a.m. for a charge of $10. The lecture will begin at 10 a.m. and is free to Beth-El members, $5 for non-members. The community is welcome, RSVP to the temple office at 516 487-0900, ext. 110.
