Seven students represented Syosset High School and competed in the second round of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair on March 12 at the Crest Hollow Country Club, previously qualifying from round one in February.
Two students — Justin Lafazan and Ritayan Chakraborty — took home first-place awards in their categories: behavioral and social sciences and cell and molecular biology, respectively, and qualified to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles from May 10-16 with an all-expense-paid trip.
Second-place awards were given to Jackee Schess in behavioral and social sciences and Jimin (Joann) Kong in mathematical sciences.
A third-place award was given to Abrar Nadroo in biochemistry.
Honorable mentions included Jared Katzen in environmental sciences and Sharon Lam in materials and bioengineering.
Additionally, special award winners included:
Jackee Schess, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Award; Lafazan, American Psychological Society Award; Kong, Mu Alpha Theta Award; and Nadroo and Chakraborty, Society for In-Vitro Biology Award.
In addition, eight students represented Syosset at the LISEF junior varsity fair.
Third-place awards in environmental sciences were won by the team of Catherine Thomas and Hayley Wolf.
Honorable mentions were also awarded to Lynn Hur for biology, and the team of JennaLynn Philipps and Shilpa Mathew in environmental sciences.
