Awards – Girl And Boy Scouts
Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending a Girl Scout Award Ceremony to recognize Gold Award recipients Caitlin Gallant, Genevieve Halka, Alyssa Lo Re, Elisa Pittella, Emily Quigley, Sabrina Rodgers and Brooke Warhurst. It was an honor to present proclamations on behalf of the Village of Garden City for Girl Scouts of America’s highest honors. I would like to take the time to commend these young individuals on their achievements and the positive contributions that they have made to their communities.
Garden City’s 2013 Drinking Water Quality Report
And Conservation Program
Last week, the water department mailed the 2013 Drinking Water Quality Report. This report demonstrates that our water is safe and meets all federal and state requirements. All results were excellent. Also, the village’s corrosion control treatment program was effective in preventing the leaching of lead and copper from your home’s plumbing into your drinking water.
The village continues to implement a water conservation program in order to minimize water use. Last summer, lawn irrigation was very high. However, residents and customers continued to conserve throughout the rest of the year resulting in a small decrease in annual usage compared to historical values.
Residents are encouraged to implement their own water conservation measures such as retrofitting plumbing fixtures with flow restrictors, modifying automatic lawn sprinklers to include rain sensors, repairing leaks in the home, installing water conservation fixtures/appliances and maintaining a daily awareness of water conservation in their personal habits including following the Village Lawn Sprinkler Regulations (sprinkling is permitted between 5 to 10 a.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. – odd numbered addresses on odd numbered days of the month even numbers on even numbered days of the month). Don’t forget that the village trees along curbsides, especially those newly planted this past fall require tender watering from residents. In addition to protecting our precious underground water supply, water conservation will produce a cost savings to the consumer in terms of both water and energy bills (hot water).
Mike Sweeney – “A Hole-In-One!”
At this time I would like to take a moment to recognize one of the village’s consummate volunteers, Mike Sweeney. Mike got a hole-in-one Saturday on the 18th Hole at the Garden City Golf Club. This hole-in-one couldn’t have happened to a nicer person, Mike is someone that gives so much to the village. Congratulations Mike.
Village Tax Bills
The village mailed tax bills today to residents and their banks. The first half of village taxes are due during the month of June and will be delinquent and subject to a penalty if payment is not made by July 1.
If you have a question, please call the tax department at village hall at 516-465-4156 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Reminder On-Line Payment Option For Village Tax Bills
As a reminder, residents are able to pay their 2014-15 village tax bill using the billage’s on-line Bill Payment Center. As with the village’s existing Water Payment Center, you will have the option of paying with either a credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) or Automated Clearing House (ACH) payment. (Additional fees to the credit card company may apply).
This option is located on the homepage of the village’s web-site, gardencityny.net, (by the orange “Piggy Bank”) or from the Village Tax Department Information Page.
Please note that you will still be able to pay your taxes/water bills in person at village hall by cash, check or money order. We cannot process credit card payments at the Village counter for tax or water payments.
Board Of Trustees Meeting
The next meeting of the board of trustees will be on Thursday, June 19 at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.
