Our Lady Of Victory School
holds annual golf classic
Although the last weekend in September signifies the end of summer, that didn’t stop many in Floral Park from enjoying one last outing of golf for a good cause.
On Sept. 26 at 11:00 a.m. the entire community was invited to the 18th Annual Our Lady of Victory (OLV) School Golf Classic at Clearview Golf Course in Bayside and a dinner at 7:30 p.m. at Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square.
The OLV annual golf classic is the school’s largest fundraising event of the year and one that has generated somewhere in the range of $40,000- $60,000 in the past five years, according to one of the chairmen of the event, Ed McCann.
“We really want to try to make an event to reach out to as many people as possible,” said chairman of the event, Ed McCann.
Registration included an option of golf and dinner for $225, golf and dinner guest for $280 or just dinner for $70, all of which was donated into the general operating pool of OLV School.
The committee has been at work for several months planning the specifics of the event but for committee leaders like McCann it has been a full-year commitment.
McCann chairs the event with fellow chair members, Mary DiSanza and Larry Pugh, all of who look to make the fundraising event an enjoyable experience while raising money for the school.
“It brings a lot of people together and gives adults a chance to go out and have a good time while taking in the community of Floral Park,” said McCann of the fundraising event.
Businesses and families also had sponsorship opportunities to donate either $150, $250, $500, $1000, or $2,000 and would in turn be recognized in various ways by the OLV school.
McCann said he is always amazed at the amount of businesses that support the cause. He explains that in the community of Floral Park there is a symbiotic relationship with the businesses and the neighborhood.
“Its businesses support people in the neighborhood and people support their businesses in return,” said McCann. “It represents the family atmosphere of Floral Park where we are there for each other in good times and bad.”
This year, McCann was very happy with the turnout as 150 sponsors turned out for the event, a long with 135 golfers.
The 18th annual classic event also marked the first year in which Father Thomas was part of the event, which added a lot of energy and a little more excitement to the event, according to McCann.
