If you’re looking for a restful night’s sleep, BedQuarters at 525 Jericho Tpke. in Mineola holds the key. Owners James and Bill Canell, both Mineola residents, offer an array of mattresses, headboards, futons, day beds, furniture, adjustable beds and mattress accessories. You’ll find brands names such as Stearns & Foster, Tempur-Pedic, Sealy, Fashion Bed Group and Wesley Allen.

Originally called the Mattress Stop, Jim and Bill took the property over in 1989 and made it into a showroom type store.

“I was working as a deliveryman for the store while I attended college and when the original owner’s lease was up we approached the landlord to see if we could take over the store,” said Jim. “I took over as store manager in 1989 and the rest is history.”

The brothers turned the warehouse style store into a showroom.

Bill knew he always wanted to own a business, going back to his days studying at Adelphi University. His days resembled that of marathon man. His typical day consisted 8 to 10 a.m. for classes, before heading straight to work until 6 p.m.

“This is what I love doing,” he said.

The Canell brothers grew up in New Hyde Park attended the Herricks School District. Repeat customers, mainly local ones, are a big part of their business.

“We offer a lot, including senior citizen and veteran discounts and offer deals for the police and firemen,” said Canell. “We’ll even do bed flipping and mattress rotation free of charge for local residents.”

BedQuarters has more than 40 different beds showcased on the floor with different styles, sizes and feel. There is also a warehouse on the premises so the customer does not need to go to another location to pick up their purchase.
The store has canopies, adjustables, headboards and a full line of home furnishings. There are also popular items such as memory foam beds and latex mattresses for sale.

“The memory foam and latex mattresses are basically spring-free mattresses and are a very popular item these days,” said Canell. “They envelop you and mold around you to provide pressure relief and cradle your head and shoulders.”

BedQuarters is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. The phone number is 516-739-2337.
