Thursday, May 14

The Floral Park Police Department will hold a “Teen Driver Safety” forum for a review of texting and driving and new license laws on Thursday, May 14, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Floral Park Memorial High School. The Floral Park Fire Department Hook & Ladder Co. 2’s teamwork and leadership seminar with Robert O’Neill will be held on Thursday, May 14, at 8 p.m. at Hofstra University’s Adam’s Playhouse, 1000 Fulton Ave. in Hempstead. O’Neill is one of the country’s most highly decorated Navy Seal combat veterans and was involved in one of the nation’s most strategic military  campaigns. Deploying more than a dozen times, O’Neill held combat leadership roles in more than 400 combat missions across four different theaters of war. After almost 17 years of service, O’Neill was honorably discharged in August 2012 as team leader with SEAL Team VI, responsible for killing Osama Bin Laden. Floral Park’s South Side Civic Association’s membership meeting will be held on Thursday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Floral Park Recreation Center. New members welcome.

The John Lewis Childs School PTA meeting will be held on Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. Chair/co-chair for the 2015-16 committees are sought.

Hance Family Foundation’s 5K and Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday, May 16, at Floral Park’s Centennial Gardens from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Emma’s One-Mile Run begins at 9 a.m. The Hance Family 5K begins at 9:30 a.m. The Pee-Wee Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Event held rain or shine. South Floral Park will hold its annual Armed Forces Day celebration, in honor of those who are actively serving in the military, on Saturday, May 16, at village hall, 383 Roquette Ave. at 11 a.m. Free and open to the public.  

Town of Hempstead’s S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program on Saturday, May 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Newbridge Road Park in South Bellmore.


Monday, May 18

AARP Floral Park Chapter #5224 and the NY Council for the Humanities will host a presentation by Robert Cohen “The Ballad of America: The History of the United States in Song” on Monday, May 18, at 1 p.m. at the Floral Park Recreation Center. Town of Hempstead’s Make A Difference Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. at Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St., Hempstead.


Thursday, May 21

“Pasta and Politics” at the next Floral Park-Bellerose Republican Club meeting on Thursday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 33 S. Tyson Ave. in Floral Park. Pasta and refreshments will be served for the last meeting before the summer break. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to bring a friend.

Bellerose Village Junior Women’s Club will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. at 50 Superior Rd.

The North End Civic Association will hold its membership meeting on Thursday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Reliance Fire House on Holland Avenue. New members welcome.

Ongoing Programs

Floral Park United Methodist Church Thrift Shop at 35 Verbena Ave. Open every Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations accepted. Call 516-354-4969.

Women with metastatic breast cancer are invited to join a support group that meets on Thursdays, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The free group is a program of the Adelphi NY statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program and meets at the Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. The group is supported by a grant from the Alpern Family Foundation. To register, call Erin Nau, counseling and education coordinator, at 516-877-4314.

The Marine Corps League has moved its meeting place from the Port Washington Elks Club to the New Hyde Park Elks Club. The Marines meet on the second Thursday of each month at 8 p.m. Call Vinny Annunziata at 516-926-9813.

At the Bellerose Jewish Center, located at 254-04 Union Tpke., in Floral Park: free Jewish education for kindergarten and Sunday School children. A thorough religious curriculum with experienced teachers for third grade to their bar/bat mitzvah is also provided.

American Legion Post 334 of Floral Park meets on the first and third Fridays (except July and Aug.) at 8:30 p.m. at 15 Elizabeth St. New members welcome. Honorable discharge from wartime military service is required.
