There was a great evening of entertainment at the Baylis Spring Concert recently, as students in the string orchestra, concert band, jazz band and chorus executed wonderful performances that made their parents very proud. With weekly lessons and lots of rehearsals, each student can certainly be proud of their achievements.
At Baylis, there are more than 120 students involved in the various instrumental groups (which include more than a dozen different instruments) and almost 115 students involved in chorus.

Baylis is very proud of the 55 NYSSMA soloists that participate in its music program and this reflects the recognition that Syosset has been named one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” by the NAMM Foundation. The NAMM foundation has acknowledged schools and districts across the country for their commitment to and support of music education in schools.
The string orchestra opened the evening with four pieces including “Rock Around the Clock.” The third grade chorus then performed four pieces including “Happy,” by Pharrel Williams and concluded with “High Flying Flag” by George M Cohen. The band then played three pieces including the theme to Star Wars to recognize “May the Fourth.” The jazz band followed and had everyone tapping their feet with “Hound Dog” and “Tuxedo Junction.” The fourth- and fifth-grade chorus concluded the evening with several songs including “A Festive Alleluia” and “Al Shlosha D’Varim” and finished with “Jump, Jive an’Wail.”
This concert was the last concert for our beloved third grade chorus director, Mrs. Lorraine Tauches. After more than 20 years in the Syosset School District she will be retiring and the Baylis chorus had a wonderful final performance to celebrate all of her years of dedicated service to our students.
