Port Musicians Shine At Carnegie Hall

Celebrating Music Institute of Long Island’s (MILI) 25th year, MILI students, including many from Port Washington, gave an outstanding GALA concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on June 25. More than 75 students performed at Weill Recital Hall with pieces ranging from solo performances to quintet chamber music works. The concert was a huge success. Port Washington residents who performed include: Sherry Shi, Nao Fukusa, William and Madeline Simms, Spencer Lane, Justin Loffredo and Caroline Filorimo.

This year’s GALA concert was comprised of various combinations of chamber music ensembles, four-hand piano pieces, quartets, quintets, violin and cello group performances.

Entering its 26th year, MILI has educated the novice student through the advanced serious performer with a phenomenal musical education. MILI offers instrumental lessons from age 3 and voice lessons from age 5 through pre-college conservatory training for students who enjoy making music as well as students who are planning to pursue a career in music. In addition to private instruction, MILI offers chamber music, theory and group classes.

More than 40 of MILI’s students have won various music competitions and have performed as soloists and chamber musicians at concert halls such as Weill Recital Hall, Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space in Manhattan and DiCapo Theater in Manhattan to mention a few.

Codirectors and sisters Carol Kushner and Geri Kushner have years of experience working with children through the conservatory-bound student. They both have bachelor’s and master’s degrees in performance as well as K-12 and Suzuki certification. They are also active performers with symphonies, opera companies, pop groups and recitalists.
