The morning of March 1 was described as a Shakespearean “Winter of Our Discontent,” as Long Island and rest of the Northeast was covered in a blanket of snow. But neither packed snowbanks, nor ice, nor the snowstorm that hit Caumsett State Park late that morning, could in any way detract from the success of what may have been the best Caumsett 50K and 25K runs ever.
Karen Conkling of Massapequa was one of the leading finishers in the 25K run, finishing the five 5 kilometer loops of the course in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 24 seconds, earning herself the third place award in the women’s 50-54 age group.
As usual, the course consisted of the five 5K loops of the park, with a dogleg half mile out-and-back to the Summer Cottage. Conditions, of course, were less than ideal. Thanks to the Long Island State Parks Region, the000 course of the event was pretty much clear, although a late defrost/freeze made for some icy conditions on the Summer Cottage dogleg.
“We were thrilled at the turnout for this year’s Caumsett Runs,” said race director Carl Grossbard of the host Greater Long Island Running Club. “We were especially happy to see some great local runners like Karen do exceptionally well.”
