A typical Golden Age Club meeting begins with president Lillian Barnola greeting members. The pledge to the flag is followed by Tom Hayden leading members in the singing of “God Bless America.” Flo Locurse always reads a heart-warming meditation and then updates members as to happy events, as well as sad events in the lives of members.
There is a certain rhythm to the scheduling of meetings, with bingo being played once monthly, and a general meeting once a month in which birthdays and anniversaries are acknowledged. Several times a month members can participate in an exercise class with Margo Bores and/or a weekly art class with member Eleni Pitzel. A book club facilitated by Pat Lackner from the Mineola Memorial Library meets once a month. By joining in these activities, members are challenged to get their bodies moving, to tap into their “artistic” sides, and to read books they otherwise might not have chosen.
Adding in guest speakers, musical entertainment, and parties, the club’s meetings are rich and diversified and fun-filled. Thus far, speakers have included Mayor Scott Strauss and Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth. A full busload of Golden Agers traveled to Woodloch Pines where they spent five days in October. It was reported that they had a wonderful time.
One of the most festive and fun-filled days of the year is the annual Halloween party. This year, members brought in snacks and candy for their tables, and the Club treated them to pizza and ice cream. Costumed members marched in a parade, to the delight of those sitting at their tables. Some of those in costume were: Marie DiStefano as “kitty kat,” Ginny Leonard as “boo,” Dottie Campbell as “cougar,” Ann Schmelke as “pumpkin princess,” Barnola as “Diamond Lil”, and Shirley Florio as “nurse Shirley.” Three winners were chosen: third prize: Lillian Brecher as a witch; second prize: Mary Guarino as a pirate; and first prize: Marie DeStefano as a cat. All those who marched in the parade received bottles of sparkling wine.
