The Town of North Hempstead is teaming up with New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Office to host a new educational program for residents, which will help protect them from home-improvement scams.
The seminar, Know Your Contractor: Know Your Home Improvement Rights, will be held on Wednesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the North Hempstead Town Board Room at Town Hall, 220 Plandome Rd. in Manhasset.
The program is designed to equip residents with the knowledge necessary to protect themselves from home-improvement scams. It will inform homeowners about their rights under New York State’s Home Improvement Laws, and give them critical tips to assist them in selecting a reputable contractor.
A representative from the New York State Attorney General’s Office will deliver the presentation. The program was recently created due to the large number of complaints the Attorney General received from homeowners about unscrupulous contractors during the past two years who, among other things, accepted money but failed to complete the job or performed work that was shoddy or negligent.
The Attorney General’s Office has investigated many of these complaints, successfully recovering thousands of dollars in restitution for defrauded New Yorkers, obtained court orders banning unscrupulous contractors from doing business in the state and, in some instances, criminally prosecuted fraudulent contractors.
