Great Neck Public School students in the SEAL program have been active doing social responsibility work for the community. Funds raised through the student-assisted Coffee Shop at the Clover Drive building went to DogAbility, an all-inclusive program located in Hicksville where children and adults can experience innovative canine-assisted experiences using certified, activity-therapy dogs. The Coffee Shop and DogAbility projects were overseen by math teacher John Paul Kopacz.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a breast cancer foundation, was also the recipient of the students’ fundraising efforts—their annual plant sale. Students sold vegetables, flowers and herbs, all raised by them from seeds. The plant sale was organized by science teacher Janice Kowalski.
The Mary Brennan Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) Soup Kitchen in Hempstead was another organization where SEAL students made a difference. They helped organize and sort food and other items that were placed in the pantry area where those in need were able to take a grocery bag full of food and toiletry items after they had finished their meal. Social studies teacher Christa Griggs was the facilitator for The INN project.
