This Sunday, September 11, 2016 Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Senator Michael Venditto and the Town of Oyster Bay will join the Tower of Freedom Military Monument Board of Directors to mark the 15th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks at the Towers of Freedom Military Monument at John Burns Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa.
Residents are invited to honor fallen heroes, first responders and veterans by placing a flower on the Monument throughout the day on September 11, 2016. A limited number of carnations will be provided.
The Monument was a project undertaken by local retired members of the FDNY, NYPD and the U.S. Military (some of whom were first responders on September 11). The Memorial to all those lost on and after 9/11, and all military veterans who died in the subsequent war on terror, took six years to complete and includes pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center. It was built with the cooperation of the elected officials from the Town of Oyster Bay.
The morning ceremony is an informal gathering and residents may honor fallen heroes, first responders and veterans throughout the day.
