With January now a memory, we head into the second month of the New Year with thoughts of Super Bowl parties, chocolate hearts and naturally, new movies galore. New adventures on the big screen await.
The Space Between Us (PG-13)
Opening on Feb. 3, The Space Between Us is a sci-fi/romance/drama sure to intrigue all ages. Peter Chelsom directs stars Britt Robertson, Asa Butterfield, Janet Montgomery, Carla Gugino and Gary Oldman. The movie begins as a shuttle is sent off to Mars where humans will attempt to inhabit and explore the planet. However, after takeoff, one of the spacewomen realizes she is pregnant. Now on Mars, she gives birth to a boy, the first human born on a planet other than Earth, and dies from child birth, never revealing who the father is. The movie tracks the boy, Gardner Elliot, as he becomes a gifted 16-year-old who wants to uncover the identity of his father, allowing him to come to Earth and experience everything he has ever imagined.
The LEGO Batman Movie (PG)
Batman is back. The LEGO Batman Movie debuts Feb. 10. This computer animated superhero movie is directed by Chris McKay and features the voices of Will Arnett, Jenny Slate, Ralph Fiennes, Zach Galifianakis, Rosario Dawson, Michael Cera and Mariah Carey. It is a spin-off of The Lego Movie from 2014 that focuses on Batman and his quest to learn more about himself and others while trying to save Gotham City. Amazing graphics bring these LEGO creatures to life.
The Great Wall (PG-13)
Matt Damon returns to the silver screen on Feb. 17, with the premiere of The Great Wall. Directed by Yimou Zhang, this epic fictional film stars Damon, Andy Lau, Titan Jing, Pedro Pascal and Willem Dafoe. The movie explores a different take regarding the famous Great Wall of China and its many secrets. With its incorporation of mystical monsters who have found hidden passageways within the wall to attack soldiers in China, mercenaries unexpectedly meet one of these monsters and, after surviving an attack, are imprisoned by the military. Greed motivates some, while others join forces to ward off the monsters and rid China from this threat once and for all. The movie is a little farfetched, however, Damon makes it work and the battle scenes are truly larger than life.
Collide (PG-13)
Eran Creery directs Collide, which debuts on Feb. 24. Starring Nicholas Hoult, Felicity Jones, Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley, the movie details an American couple who travel abroad when Jones’ character becomes very ill. Her boyfriend (Hoult) is desperate to save her and gets mixed up with gangsters and drug lords. It’s a race against time and evil and with Kingsley and Hopkins as the bad guys, what can possibly be wrong about this movie.
