This Week’s Anton Lesson Plan
Social studies is a subject whose purpose is of helping students understand the roles history and geography play in the day-to-day of culturally diverse and democratic society. It’s a baseline that’s an integral part of what newspapers cover on a regular basis.
• Over a period of several weeks, clip articles that deal with problems and/or issues facing your local or county government. Discuss the reasons for these problems and how the government hopes to solve them. Can you find any proposed solutions in the newspaper?
• Create a bulletin board for your classroom concerned with the men and women holding positions in your local government. Clip newspaper pictures of city, town or village leaders, school board members and any others you feel should be included.
• Is freedom of the press important? After reading your newspaper for several weeks write a report on whether or not you feel freedom of the press is a vital need in our society. Look at a copy of this week’s newspaper and use a marker to blacken out any articles you think would not appear if we did not have freedom of the press.
• Study the Constitution and Bill of Rights and become familiar with what we as Americans have guaranteed under these documents. Scan through the newspaper and find as many examples of these rights as you can.
