Back On The Baseline

SportsBasketballBack at GNN HS. Back for a strong 2019

The Great Neck North Boys Varsity Basketball team got a little beaten up over the break.

Though shorthanded on Jan. 2 with Hyman and Youseffi home ill, the Blazers fought hard against the sharp-shooting Jericho Jayhawks.

Although Kyle Kamali (JR Smith) suffered a broken nose versus Valley Stream North a week earlier, he managed to chuck in 15 points. Yaz added another 15 via five tres pointers and Action Jackson totaled 13.

Most impressive was big Shaun Mac with 11 points, 11 blocks and 12 rebounds. The senior big man is on pace to break shot-blocking records posted by Shawn Bradley, Manute Bol, Paul Valenti and Mutumbo.

In conference games, the scoring average leaders thus far are Kamali with 20.1 points per game (PPG), Cronin with 10.3 PPG, Yaz with 8.2 PPG and McAward with 8.1 PPG.

The team experienced growing pains at the game on Polo Road against John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore on Saturday, Jan. 5, losing 69-44.

Scoring leaders were Kamali with 15 points, Jacobs with 12 and Cronin with 9. McAward had 8 blocks.

We will report on the Jan. 8 home game against New Hyde Park in next week’s issue. The following two games will be held on Friday, Jan. 11, at 4:30 p.m. at Carey High School in Franklin Square and Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 4:30 p.m. at Elmont.
