Breast cancer survivors and local community members will unite on Wednesday, Aug. 14, to share their stories and kickoff Long Island’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) walk, the largest in the USA. More than 800 breast cancer advocates and supporters are expected at the breakfast event at Crest Hollow Country Club, 8325 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury.
Registration beings at 7 a.m., with the program beginning at 7:30 a.m. Dr. Richard Wender, chief cancer control officer of the American Cancer Society, will deliver the keynote address. Val Mortimer of Northport, a metastatic breast cancer survivor, will be honored.
Kira Warren, a breast cancer survivor, will share her story of community support through the Great Neck Fire/EMS where she volunteers. Geri Hart, Steve Bellone and Nassau County Executive Laura Curran will attend and welcome guests.
This breakfast announcement will give Long Islanders the opportunity to learn how to get involved in the walks slated for Sunday, Oct. 20, at Jones Beach State Park and Sunday, Oct. 27, at Suffolk County Community College.
Long Island is home to the largest attended and fundraising breast cancer walks in the United States, with more than 65,000 participants raising more than 2.65 million last year. MSABC is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, with more than 1 million participants each year in more than 200 communities.
MSABC unites communities, honors those touched by the disease, and raises awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer.
Funds raised help the American Cancer Society to invest in groundbreaking breast
cancer research; provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by
breast cancer; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.
According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2019, an estimated 17,490 women in New York will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 2,460 will die from the disease this year. Additional breast cancer statistics can be found here.
