Pets for Adoption, Plus How to Keep Them Safe from the Summer Heat

summer heat

The Nassau County SPCA would like to remind everyone that the summer heat can quickly become dangerous for your pet, even deadly.  With temperatures creeping up, it’s time to brush up on ways to keep your four-legged family members safe.

  • Protect your pets from the sun’s rays and keep them hydrated.
  • The inside of your car can reach 120 degrees in just minutes.
  • If it’s too hot for bare feet, it’s too hot for bare paws.
  • Don’t let playful pets overexert themselves in the heat.
  • And keep pets indoors where it’s cool.

To report animal abuse, call 516-THE-SPCA or email nassaucountyspca.org immediately.

**Donation Request**

Last week, an extremely malnourished dog was dumped at a rescue organization, Bobbi and the Strays. Although she’s now eating, she’s only gained 2 ounces. After starving for so long and suffering from severe anemia, gaining weight will be a slow process, but it’s expected. She has to be strong enough and at a certain weight before she can get the surgeries for all of her sores. A donation fund has been set up as she will need to spend at least 2 months with the vet. Donations can be made here: givinggrid.com/vuzpwm.

Zachary
Zachary

Zachary was found on the street in early May 2022, injured, having been shot with a BB gun. Thanks to the efforts of a good Samaritan finding him the vet care he needed, Zachary made a full recovery and is now on a mission to find a forever family to call his own. This handsome, 5-year-old fella is FIV positive, so if you already have an FIV kitty, he will make a wonderful feline companion. If you are looking to adopt just a super friendly feline, you can’t go wrong with Zachary. This social butterfly likes to be pet, fine with being picked up, laid back and likes other cats. He’s recommended for a home with tween aged kids.

Marv
Marv

**Senior Alert** Marv is a pint-sized prince that really the cat’s meow. He arrived at the shelter in early May with an open wound on his foot; he is all healed and ready to find a forever home. It was during his routine vet care he was diagnosed with diabetes. He is responding well to the medication and is being recommended for a home with tween aged kids, where he isn’t going to be confused as a stuffy animal. While he does solicit attention, he also can easily lay atop a cat tree and watch the world from the safety of inside. Marv is 8 years old and looking for a low-traffic home to call his own. If you are looking for companionship, please consider this fella.

Creed
Creed

**Senior Alert** You can’t find a better dog than Creed. Aside from his handsome physique, Creed is the best friend you could ever want. He is house-broken, loves to play but really is just as happy to be near his people. He loves to meet new people, (Social butterfly is his profession by choice). He is gentle when taking treats, likes every treat including carrots and knows plenty of tricks to keep you engaged. He is a great partner on trails or a slight jog and will let you know when it’s time to go out for a walk or a romp just in the yard. He will pull if he spots a rabbit or squirrel so you have to be on your toes when you are walking him. He is best suited to be a solo dog since he prefers humans to canines. This senior has a heart of gold – he loves belly rubs, ear rubs and loves to give kisses! He would be best matched with a family with tween aged kids, (or no kids) and no other pets.

For more information about adopting Zachary, Marv or Creed, please contact the shelter at  [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], or call 516-785-5220.

Rosie and Tabitha
Rosie and Tabitha

**Double Senior Adoption** Rosie (Tortoiseshell) and Tabitha (Calico) are a pair of 12-to-13-year-old Female Domestic Shorthair sisters who came to the Animal Shelter after their mom passed away. They enjoy each other’s company, and while it would be wonderful for them to be adopted together, they may be separated for the purrfect home. Rosie is sweet and outgoing and will let you pet her for hours on end. Tabitha is more reserved and shy, but in a nice, quiet home, we believe she will start to open up and come out of her shell. Rosie and Tabitha have experience living with other cats, but not with dogs.

Currently, there are a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster. If you are looking for a fun loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two, or call 631-360-7575 for more information.

Chance and Spots
Chance and Spots

**Double Adoption** Despite the difficult life they shared before they were rescued, 2-year-old’s Chance (Adoption #BF3948) and her sister Spots (Adoption #BF3949) vowed to support each other furever. You’ll find them giving each other comfort as they navigate all the new firsts in their lives. Watching them discover the ordinary experiences cats typically enjoy fills us up with so much joy! Chasing balls and bathing in catnip are just some of their favorite activities. These beautiful girls never knew so much freedom—or love—before. They’re ready to share this joy with you.

Aloha
Aloha

Look who’s turning one! What a year it’s been for Aloha Adoption #T103654). She traveled to us all the way from Tennessee and into one of Animal League America’s wonderful foster homes as their veterinary team worked on creating the healthy plan needed to treat Aloha’s heart condition.  Now this green-eyed beauty has graduated to a sunny room in Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center where she is med-free and having a blast with catnip parties. Nothing stops the fun for our little one, but she’s ready to take the party to your home and celebrate all her future birthdays with you! Photo by Ted Lim

Isabel
Isabel

**Senior Alert** Twelve-year-old Isabel (Adoption #H194441) needed help to restore her faith in human beings. Animal League America was alerted to her desperate need for safety when her neighbors reported her abandoned in her home. Their rescue, medical, and feline teams have risen to the occasion by giving her a clean bill of health and a quiet space to breathe easy, knowing she has them to depend upon. This stunning senior has never lived with other cats and would prefer to be the only pet in a quiet home with understanding children over age 12 and adults who’ve shown patience with their cats before. New situations frighten her, yet she sees how gentle and loving her caretakers are which gives her something she hasn’t had in a very long time: someone to trust. If you’d like to offer Isabel a soft place to land after a hard stretch of her life, you’d could be the hero we’ve been hoping for to offer her the golden years she deserves as a beloved pet.

Juniper
Juniper

It was Juniper’s (Adoption #T103907) lucky day when she was delivered from her southern rescue to safety with Animal League America to comfortably raise her kittens before focusing on her own care. Their vets took wonderful care of this lovely 6-year-old lady, and now she’s ready for a permanent place to spend the rest of her life. Although she thinks Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center can’t be beat, there’s no place like a furever home. Want to be the one showing her what it means to be part of a family? Swing by and introduce yourself to the new love of your life!

Midnight Star
Midnight Star

Tiny momma Midnight Star (Adoption#BF3976) lost some of her luster when she was tending to her kittens in Animal League America’s Nursery. Lucky for this 1-year-old she cares for her babies in the safe indoors. She’s becoming accustomed to this more reliable lifestyle, and with a little gentle purrsuasion she’ll soon be enjoying all the perks of being unencumbered by motherly responsibilities and will bring joy to your household as she discovers how to be a kitten herself again. To help this mini-house-panther settle into life as part of a family, she’s looking for a calm home (with kids over age 10) that will provide her the predictability she’s grown to appreciate. In no time, Midnight Star will be glowing with all the love and gratitude she can offer as thanks for providing her a loving home.

Cassie
Cassie

Cassie (Adoption #H211398) is a cutie pie—plain and simple! Offer her a chin scratch and watch the gratitude pour from her heart right into your hands. This local rescue has been abundantly grateful to receive loving care as she settles into shelter living, and no doubt about it, you’ll be cooing Cassie’s praises when she joins your family!

Gingerbread and Cranberry
Gingerbread and Cranberry

**Double Adoption** Two-year-olds Gingerbread (Adoption #NCI2003) and Cranberry (Adoption #NCI2013) haven’t been feeling very festive since they returned to Animal League America’s care when their family moved away. Not to worry! They’ve found treats and catnip open them up to new pawsibilities! While they can be slightly apprehensive about exploring new surroundings, Gingerbread (male) and Cranberry (female) gain confidence in having each other to share life’s ups and downs. You’ll find these two very happy to welcome ear rubs which will open up the door to a whole new world for all of you!

Goldie
Goldie

Momma Goldie (Adoption #NCI2611) came back to Animal League America after a very successful stay with a family who unfortunately could no longer care for her due to allergies. Her bright and shiny purrsonality has given her the perspective that her next family will be for good. This lovely, 3-year-old lady was originally rescued from their sister shelter in Glen Falls, NY and was given a new lease on life when our vets treated her for heartworm. They’ll continue to care for her if she ever needs more support from their Pet Health Centers, and her heartworm will be covered at cost, clearing the way for her next (and forever) family to cherish her completely, knowing they’ll always have the Animal League America family to cheer them on.
