Glen Cove celebrated the 4th of July with its annual bike parade, which challenges participants to deck their bikes and scooters out in red, white and blue decor.

“It was a great weekend,” said Mayor Pam Panzenbeck.

The parade began at Finlay Middle School at kicked off at 10  a.m., traveling through the city’s downtown to the Village Square. The parade is a decades-old tradition, going back about 20 years, Panzenbeck said.

The event was put on by the city’s Youth Bureau, which provided ribbons and decorations for everyone in attendance and has seen a hike in participation in recent years. Panzenebck said this year’s was the biggest crowd yet.

Panzebeck said the children were especially excited to ride down the streets, which had been shut down for the parade.

“The kids just love it,” she said.

At Village Square, Panzenbeck said the participants sang patriotic songs and celebrated the holiday. She said prizes were given to the best-decorated bicycles.

After the bike parade, the celebrations continued at Morgan’s Park with a concert and fireworks show, which Panzenbeck said was one of the best fireworks shows in the city to date.
