This October, for Energy Efficiency Awareness Month, PSEG Long Island shines its Small Business Stars spotlight on local small businesses making a difference. We spoke with Jodi Fera, owner of Moves & Motions Dance in Manhasset, about how her studio blends passion for dance, community impact, and sustainable practices recognized by PSEG Long Island’s Business First program.

What do you love about being in this business/being an owner?

I love that I get to share my lifelong passion for dance with new generations. Being a studio owner means I’m not only teaching steps, but also helping children grow in confidence, discipline, and joy…lessons that last far beyond the studio.

How do you feel your business impacts the local community?

What I love most is the sense of community. Over the years, Moves & Motions has become a second home for so many families, and I feel privileged to guide dancers from their first class to the moment they discover who they are meant to be. Beyond the studio, I’m proud that we come together for service projects and outreach, teaching our dancers the importance of giving back and making a difference. That combination of connection, growth, and community impact is what makes being a studio owner so meaningful to me.

How did PSEG Long Island’s Business First Program support you?

I’m so grateful to PSEG Long Island’s Business First program for recognizing Moves & Motions. Their commitment to supporting small businesses through energy savings, revitalization efforts, and hands-on guidance, truly makes a difference. Being nominated by them is an honor and a reminder of how powerful community partnerships can be in helping local businesses grow and thrive.

What role do you think small businesses play in promoting energy efficiency within the broader community?

Each business needs to do their part. Small businesses set the tone in their communities. When we make energy efficiency a priority, it not only reduces costs and waste but also inspires families and other businesses to follow our lead. Every small change adds up to a bigger impact.

How do you feel about being a Small Business Star?

Being recognized as a Small Business Star is truly an honor. After nearly four decades of running Moves & Motions, it means so much to know that the passion, hard work, and community commitment we put into our studio are seen and celebrated. It inspires me to keep striving to make a difference for our dancers, their families, and our community.
