Tragedy struck the Roslyn community twice Monday, March 9, when two women were killed in separate pedestrian crashes in Nassau County.

One of the victims, Elena Crowley, worked as a security aide at Roslyn High School, where her death was met by grieving staff and students.

According to Nassau County police, the crash occurred at about 5:22 p.m. in Wantagh. Police said a 57-year-old man driving a 2025 GMC pickup truck was traveling west on Lufberry Avenue and turning south onto Briard Street when the vehicle struck Crowley.

The pedestrian, identified as 53-year-old Crowley of Wantagh, was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead by hospital staff. Police said the driver remained at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

In a message to the school community Monday night, Superintendent Allison Brown said Crowley’s sudden death has left the district in mourning.

“Elena was more than a colleague; she was a vital part of our school family,” Brown wrote. “She worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff. Her kindness and vigilance will be deeply missed, and her absence will be felt throughout our entire community.”

Brown said counseling services would be available for students, staff and families as the district copes with the loss. Crowley is survived by her husband and two children.

Earlier Monday, another fatal pedestrian crash was reported in Greenvale.

Police said a 69-year-old woman, identified as Claudia Moncada of Glen Cove, was crossing the eastbound lanes of Glen Cove Road when she was struck by a red 2018 Dodge Challenger driven by a 26-year-old man traveling north.

Moncada was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The driver remained at the scene and an investigation is ongoing.
