Saturday, September 19

Serving Spirits at Spirit Day

The area at New Hyde Park Rd. and Dartmouth St. will be transformed into the annual playground known as Spirit Day. Rides, attractions, vendor’s music and food all add up to a memorable day. At 5 p.m., an outdoor Mass will be offered. The evening will culminates with the drawing of the Big Bucks Raffle winners. Plan on spending some time at Spirit Day, where fun food and laugher will all be in store.

County Fair

Held at the Queens County Farm Museum, 73-50 Little Neck Pky., Floral Park, Sept. 19 and 20 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This wonderful family event is a traditional county fair with Blue Ribbon competitions in livestock, produce, arts and crafts and more. Early American craft demonstrations, pie eating and corn husking contests, pig racing, birds of prey show, make your own scarecrow, petting zoo, hayrides, carnival rides, midway, magic and ventriloquist shows and musical entertainment. Enjoy an Irish band and dancers on Saturday and a German band and dancers on Sunday. Visit the Bavarian Garden, food and craft vendors. The Amazing Maize, a 3-acre corn maze adventure, will be open at the fair (maize admission $8 adults; $5 children ages 4 to 11; age 3 and under free). Starving Craftsman Fair

Held by the Floral Park Junior Woman’s Club to benefit its scholarship fund. Crafts, jewelry, and other moderately priced items for home and garden. 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Park, Tulip and Plainfield Aves., Floral Park. Items are still being accepted. Monday, September 21

JLCS PTA Meeting

The John Lewis Childs School PTA will hold the first meeting of the school year at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. Everyone is welcome to attend. Dr. Lynn Pombonyo, Superintendent of the Floral Park-Bellerose School District, will be the guest speaker. Refreshments will be served and babysitting will be provided.


Tuesday, September 22

Sewanhaka Central H.S. District Board of Ed

Regular meeting at Sewanhaka High School, 500 Tulip Ave., Floral Park, at 7:30 p.m. It is anticipated that a motion to adjourn to Executive Session will be made immediately after the opening of the public portion of the meeting to discuss matters involving particular personnel and matters within the attorney-client relationship. Old Time Country Barn Dance

Live music, professional musicians. No dance experience necessary. Dance lessons provided and demonstrated. Sing-along with a guitar playing folk singer and a fiddler. Casual attire. West End Civic Meeting

The West End Civic Association meeting will be held at 8 p.m. at the Atlantic Avenue firehouse. West End trustee, Tom Tweedy, will provide an update of the events and happenings that occurred during the summer as well as report on aircraft noise, LIRR issues and Belmont Park news. President Perry Criscitelli urges all members to come and invites new members as well. Refreshments will be served.

College and Career Night

Sponsored by the Sewanhaka Central High School District and the Sewanhaka Central Council of PTAs at 7 p.m. at New Hyde Park Memorial High School, 500 Leonard Blvd., New Hyde Park. Representatives from approximately 100 colleges, universities, technical and business schools, schools specializing in specific areas, military academies and the Armed Forces will be in attendance to speak with parents and students. Included in their presentation will be information on programs of study, admission requirements, scholarships and financial aid. Everyone is welcome.

Steak and Lobster Dinner

The donation of is $35 per person and includes a “direct from Maine” lobster, shell steak, salad, baked potato, dessert, coffee, tea or soda. Pick Your Own Pumpkin

October is pumpkin month at the Queens County Farm Museum, 73-50 Little Neck Pky., Floral Park. Enjoy wandering through the planting field to find your favorite pumpkin through Oct. 31. Liz’s Day

Sewanhaka High School’s Students and Teachers Against Cancer (STAC) will hold their annual Flea Market from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in front of the Sewanhaka High School building. All proceeds will benefit the Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) Foundation in memory of Lisa Zahler.

Village-Wide Garage Sale

Sponsored by the Junior Women’s Club of Bellerose from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bellerose LIRR parking lot, Superior Rd. With over 50 families participating, there are bargains for everyone. The club will host a bake sale, refreshments and little folk’s lemonade stand. The event will help support local scholarships, breast cancer awareness and Ronald McDonald House. Rain date Oct. 4.

Art in the Park

Apple Festival

A large variety of apples, apple products and freshly pressed cider will be available. The nation’s largest apple cobbler will be baked on site. Enjoy cider-pressing demonstrations while learning fun apple facts. Vendors will have a variety of collectibles for sale. Food, hayrides and free children’s games will make this event fun for all ages. Make your own scarecrow. GOP Dinner Dance

The Stewart Manor-New Hyde Park Republican Club will honor two outstanding individuals, Anthony Corrao of Stewart Manor and Jim McHugh of New Hyde Park. A dinner dance in their honor will be held on Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Umberto’s Restaurant, 633 Jericho Tpke., New Hyde Park. Anthony Corrao has been instrumental in aiding people with disabilities and ailments in the community. As a charter member of the Elmont Lions Club, he organized an annual pancake breakfast and theater night with profits going to purchase two service dogs for the blind. James “Big Jim” McHugh is an accomplished pharmacist by trade and unwavering defender of his community by vocation. He serves on the executive board of the Parks Civic Association and has championed numerous causes in the pursuit of maintaining and enhancing the suburban quality of life in the New Hyde Park community. Flu Shots to Be Administered

This year’s flu shots will be administered Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Floral Park Recreation Center. Registration is required. As in prior years, the program will be administered by the L.I.J. Medical Center. You will need to present your Medicare card in order to receive your shot. Marketing Seminar/Networking Event

On Oct. 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 .m., State Bank of Long Island will sponsor a free networking event and business seminar entitled “Innovative Marketing Strategies in the New Economy.” The event will be held at the New Hyde Park branch located at 699 Hillside Avenue. The presenters of the business seminar are Marla Seiden, president of Seiden Communications, a New Hyde Park based public relations and marketing firm, and Stephanie Larkin, president of Red Penguin Web Solutions, a Floral Park based web development and design firm.
