The Plainview Old Bethpage Public Library opened its doors on Saturday, after being closed for a week, with a new look. After entering the library and walking through the lobby, residents are now greeted with an information desk and circulation desk.
The library staff member seated at the information desk is there to help with general questions and information on programs, fax machine assistance, help with the copy machines, program registration and information about other library services and materials. The circulation desk will strictly be for transitions involving checking materials in and out.
The renovations were largely funded through a public library construction grant program and through legislative appropriated funds.
Although the two-desk design is up and running, the work is not complete. The area is still to be fitted with chairs, benches and lighting to enhance the patrons’ visit to the library.
“The community response has been very positive,” said Library Director Gretchen Browne. “People like being greeted by a friendly face and getting a prompt response. We are so much more than books here and now we have a staff member dedicated to helping the community.”
Another project in the works for the library is a self-checkout system for taking out books. That should be in place in about two weeks.
“The staff at the library has been great,” said Browne. “They have been adaptive, cooperative and exceeded my expectations dealing with this change.”
Browne said she is very pleased with the work that was done at the library and how fast it was completed. She is excited about the idea of more enhancements and helping keep the library’s five-star status.
