Oratorical Contest

On Saturday, Jan. 30, Nassau County American Legion Oratorical Contest winners Necha Sharma of Hicksville High School and Ronald Taylor of Holy Trinity High School will compete against their counterparts from Suffolk County and Queens County in the American Legion District Oratorical Contest to be held at the Glenwood Landing Post at 10 a.m. Hicksville Legionnaires and our Auxilary members are so proud of Necha Sharma and Ronald Taylor for representing the Hicksville Post, our community and our schools. Commander Charles Rockwood extends to them a “job well done.”

Legacy Scholarship Fund

At the last meeting of Post 421 Vice Commander Pete Johnson collected donations for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund. The Legacy Fund provides financial support to children attending college who have a parent who died in military service. Current government benefits do not provide enough support to cover education costs. Information can be obtained at www.legion.org/ scholarships/legacy. Johnson urges community support for the Legacy Scholarship Fund.

Veterans Legislation

The American Legion urges community support for Senate Bill 252 Veterans Health Care Authorization Act of 2009 and Senate Bill 728 Veterans Insurance and Benefits Enhancement Act of 2009. Senator Coburn (OK) has placed “holds” on these two significant pieces of veterans’ legislation. Please call Senator Coburn’s office at (202) 224-5754 and urge him to release his holds on both these bills.
