From the Desk of Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy

“I am pleased to announce the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has awarded the Floral Park Fire Department a grant for $142,500. The grant is administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

This grant program is part of the effort to strengthen the nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and fire-related hazards. The funding will be used for the Operations and Safety Area (training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities).

Floral Park’s firefighters respond to hundreds of calls a year, both in the village and in neighboring fire districts. We cannot ask so much of these firefighters without making sure they have up-to-date safety equipment.

I have held an annual grants workshop to help fire departments prepare effective grant proposals. Since the first workshop in 2003, millions of dollars in Assistance to Firefighters grants have been awarded to 4th Congressional District firefighters.

Since 9/11, our firefighters have been charged with new responsibilities. Congress must continue to provide local fire departments with the resources to meet these new challenges.”
