On Sunday, April 25, students and seniors in Plainview-Old Bethpage will participate in the first NORCWALK, an intergenerational event to benefit seniors in the community. Students will select a senior to partner with and they will spend some time getting to know each other in the weeks before the event. This event will promote intergenerational communication, enhance the student’s understanding of the life history of the senior and the challenges they face, raise awareness of POB Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) raise funds so that this vital program can continue to help area seniors remain in their homes and live independently. The walk will start at 9 a.m. at POB Middle School.
Six-year-old Shoshana Lerman of Plainview will be walking with her grandma on April 25. “I can’t wait to walk with my grandma. It will be so much fun.” Grandma Adele Spickler added, “I am so excited to participate in this event with my little Shoshi. It’s a great way for me to honor the seniors and teach my granddaughter the importance of giving back to the community.”
Plainview-Old Bethpage Neighborhood NORCs (POB Cares/Project PACE) are dedicated to enabling all seniors (age 60+) to remain in their homes. POB Neighborhood NORCs strive to maintain and improve the quality of life for all seniors in our community and the entire family of caregivers. POB Neighborhood NORCs are committed to providing seniors with access to public and private services and resources that will enable them to live independently. As a catalyst within the community, POB Neighborhood NORCs are devoted to building coalitions and partnerships with all local organizations, businesses and government in an effort to bring awareness of senior issues to the forefront and serve as an agent for change. All NORC services are provided at no cost to the client.
