Long Island Children’s Museum Receives Grant for Books
The Long Island Children’s Museum recently received a $10,000 grant from Verizon to support the literacy component of the Museum’s enrichment program for high need school districts on Long Island called KICKstart. The grant underwrote four family nights in the Hempstead school district where children and parents created storybooks.
The storybooks were created in a literacy based workshop called “Believe It or Not!” inspired by an image-making exercise. This program allows children to weave visual imagery and the written word together as they become published authors and illustrators. This approach to writing has proven to further children’s use of descriptive language, incorporate more developed story plots, as well as extend their imagination. The use of visual imagery offers visual and kinesthetic learners another avenue to enter the world of words.
Inspired by surrealism, the children and their grownups were asked to create scenes using a collage technique. Working with environmental backgrounds and imagery from magazines, the children illustrated their imaginative ideas. Writing about their surprising creations was the next step. Each child was given the option to write about their illustration in any way they chose. Each story will be put together to create a storybook that will be available in all four school’s libraries.
KICKstart (Kids Ideas Create Knowledge) is a groundbreaking learning initiative, launched in 2002, to strengthen the Museum’s programming for children and families in high-need school district. KICKstart has provided year round programming to Head Start, second and third graders in underserved communities on Long Island that are most in need of educational enrichment programs including Hempstead, Roosevelt, Central Islip & Wyandanch. Schools selected to be served by KICKstart are those with records of poorer academic performance, a significantly higher percentage of students eligible for free/reduced lunch programs, and higher limited English proficiency populations as compared to State averages.
Long Island Children’s Museum is a learning laboratory where hands-on exhibits invite visitors to experiment, examine and play. Through lively interdisciplinary activities, children and adults can share in the excitement of the learning process as they explore the world in which we live. The museum is designed for infants through 12 and their grownups. LICM is a not-for-profit institution chartered by the New York State Board of Regents.
