Runners Invited to Bethpage Trail Relay

Runners of all ages and levels of ability are invited to join the Greater Long Island Running Club at Bethpage State Park on Saturday morning, Feb. 19 for the 13th annual Runner’s Edge-Carter, DeLuca, Farrell & Schmidt Trail Relay. The Relay will start at exactly 10 a.m.

There will be three runners on a relay team and each will run a two-mile loop starting and finishing adjacent to the Picnic Area in the park. You can form your own team, or we will help put together “pick up” teams on the morning of the relay.

The event’s organizers are pleased to announce that the always generous Bob Cook and the gang at The Runner’s Edge and Ray Farrell and all the good people at Carter, DeLuca, Farrell & Schmidt have signed on once again to sponsor this popular event.

There will once again be a free commemorative shirt for everyone who enters and $75 cash awards will be presented to the first place Men’s, Womens’s and Co-Ed Open, Masters and Senior Master’s teams. The “GLIRC Field Kitchen” will once again be on hand to provide everyone with cookies, hot chocolate, soup and muffins. There will once again be a great merchandise raffle. Greater Long Island Running Club Vice President Carl Grossbard and his committee will put the whole show together.

In February of 2010, the trails were totally snowed under, so GLIRC was forced to adapt to a run around the parking lots instead. Hopefully, things will be better weatherwise in 2011, but one way or another it will be a “fun” morning of running!

This fun morning is once again being offered free of charge to members of the Greater Long Island Running Club who sign up in advance. The cost for non-members and all day of race registrants is only a nominal $5 per runner.

GLIRC hopes to be able to make a significant donation to the Center for Developmental Disabilities and the outstanding work they are doing to help children and adults with autism, developmental disabilities and other differing abilities achieve their dreams by overcoming barriers to living, learning, working, and recreating. Anyone who would like to make a donation is most encouraged to do so!

The two-mile distance is something nobody should be afraid of, the trails at Bethpage State Park are beautiful and are very “runner friendly,” and you are guaranteed to have an outstanding morning.

For entry forms or information, call Mike or Linda at the GLIRC office at 349-7646.
