Feast by the Shore

The St. Boniface Feast by the Shore will be a 4-day celebration May 19 (6 to 10 p.m.), May 20 (6 to 11 p.m.), May 21 (1 to 11 p.m.), May 22 (1 to 6 p.m.) at Harry Tappan Beach, Shore Rd., Glenwood Landing. The feast will showcase rides and games from Newton Shows for people of all ages. A large assortment of vendors and delicious homemade food items will be available to tempt the palate. Musical entertainment will take place nightly in the Town of Oyster Bay Showmobile. Entertainment will be provided by: Thursday- Tequlia-Mayham; Friday – The Bob Rieger Band; Saturday – Six Gun and Just Sixties to name a few. Go to www.saintboniface.org.

Piano Recital

Presented by Xun Wang in the Grace Auditorium, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, One Bungtown Rd., Cold Spring Harbor, at 6 p.m. Individual tickets will be sold at the door in Grace Auditorium for $20. Call 367-8455 to reserve seats. Mr. Wang has performed in venues such as the Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington and the Wigmore Hall in London. He has also won first prize in Xin Hai National competition, the Stravinsky International Competition, the Senigalia International competition, the Gracewelsh International Competition and the Gina Bachauer International Piano (2002 and 2004) Competition at Juilliard.

Concert

The acclaimed Canta Libre Chamber Ensemble will be in concert at 4 p.m. at Christ Church, 61 East Main St. Repertoire for this concert will be chamber masterworks for flute, harp and strings, including Gabriel Pierne’s Voyage, George Gerswhin’s Lullaby and music by Bohuslav Martinu, Arthur Honegger, Nancy Gufstavson and Joseph Jongen. All Breed Dog Show

Hosted by the LI Kennel Club at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Auxiliary Field, 1303 Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage. Doors open at 8 a.m. Featured at the event: breed judging, rally and obedience competition, breed showcase, demonstration by the U.S. Police Canine Association, vendors, cake for everyone before Best in Show competition. Muttontown Hike

Enrollment for the hikes ($5) is limited and preregistration is required by calling 571-8500 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hike will begin at the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve, Muttontown Ln., south of 25A, East Norwich. May 22: Early Bird Walk focuses on the spring migration of birds in the woods and meadows. As part of the program, there will be a demonstration of bird banding, displays of captured birds (that will be subsequently released), and a discussion of migration patterns. The walk is approximately three miles over mostly flat terrain; participants are encouraged to bring binoculars. 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Magic Show, Carnival, Barbecue

Sponsored by Chabad of Oyster Bay and Jericho at 5:30 p.m. at 1055 Oyster Bay Rd., East Norwich. The cost is $18 per family. The event, open to the public, will mark the observance of the Jewish holiday of Lag B’Omer. The festivities will include a Magic Show by Gave the magician, face painting, balloons for all children, music, a petting zoo, as well as a delicious barbecue, drinks and cotton candy. Presidents’ Cup Golf Outing

To benefit the Boys and Girls Club of OB-EN). Held at the Pine Hollow Country Club. $400 pp. Prizes include a 2011 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 for the Hole-in-One winner. Events begin at 10:30 a.m. with registration, a breakfast buffet, and tee off at noon. The day ends with cocktails and a buffet dinner, (cocktails and buffet dinner only $150); award presentation. Dr. John A. Gable Lecture Series 2011

The Friends of Sagamore Hill holds the 7th Annual Dr. John A. Gable Lecture Series. This program is free to the public and offers the opportunity to both hear and speak with illustrious experts on subjects and people related to our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt and Oyster Bay history. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the programs begin at 7:20 p.m. at Christ Church Parrish Hall, 14 West Main St., Oyster Bay. Following each lecture and brief discussion, light refreshments will be served and the public can meet with the speakers in an informal setting. Each speaker may have published works to be purchased. May 26: Dr. Edward Kohl, author and university professor presents “Theodore Roosevelt and the Great Heat Wave of 1896.” Dr Kohl explores the New York City police commissioner’s response to this forgotten natural disaster.

Oyster Bay Farmers Market Grand Opening

The market features over 15 vendors and offers goods as varied as homemade pickles to natural pet treats, will celebrate its grand opening. New hours this year are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The market will continue to operate every Friday through Oct. 28. Many vendors from the market’s inaugural year are eagerly returning to harvest the benefits of a bursting downtown. They will be joined by an impressive number of new exciting vendors wanting to be part of the weekly event. The market will now be situated on Audrey Ave., north of the Oyster Bay Bandstand, which will become a pedestrian thoroughfare on market days. The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is organizing and managing this enterprise in conjunction with the Town of Oyster Bay. Call 922-6982.

The Knitanistas

The meetings are held in the Oyster Bay Library at 1p.m. The main purpose of the group is to create projects for CaretoKnit who then distributes them to the needy. However, you are free to bring personal projects to work on too, so expertise can be shared. It will be a relaxed atmosphere allowing for the free exchange of ideas, experiences, thoughts and fun. How To Plan and Promote Your Own Business

Successful businesses don’t just happen by luck. Your idea has to be carefully planned and nurtured. Learn how to find the right niche, identify your customer base, and communicate effectively to reach your target market. Our focus will help you avoid the three most common marketing mistakes that new business owners often make. The program will be held at 7 p.m. at the Syosset Library, 225 S. Oyster Bay Rd., Syosset (921-7161). Presented by Professor Jack Mandel of Nassau Community College’s Department of Marketing Retailing/Fashion/Interior Design. He also serves as the program coordinator of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Business Initiative Seminars, a partnership between the town’s Department of Economic Development and NCC.

Art Walk First Thursday

Art Walk features an international spectrum of contemporary artists. Get some artistic inspiration as you visit local art galleries. Other businesses and sites in town will be displaying artwork. Local restaurants will be exhibiting art and are offering a percentage off on meals, wine tastings and more. Live music entertainment is scheduled. Cafes and restaurants will remain open late for dessert and coffee. The evening will begin with Chase Edwards Gallery, 15 E. Main St. (802-0655) and continues at Atelier Gallery, 9 E. Main St.; Art (that matters), 55 W. Main St. (917-769-9921); The Teaching Studios of Oyster Bay, 115 Audrey Ave. (971-597-2404); and The Artist Club Gallery, 29 Berry Hill Rd. will also be open. Art will also be available for viewing at various downtown merchants, including Canterbury Ales, Jack Halyards and Wild Honey. The Oyster Bay Main Street Association office (17 Audrey Ave.) will also be displaying the works of local artists, with refreshments served. Sundown Concert Series

Once again, the acts will coincide with Oyster Bay’s “First Thursday” Art Walk, adding another option for residents and visitors enjoying the gallery exhibits, restaurant specials and general bonhomie on those evenings. Sundown concerts are free for everyone and chairs are provided for your listening pleasure. All concerts are from 7 to 9 p.m. and each month will feature something different. Learn Sign Language at Mill Neck Manor

Sign Language Camp for Hearing Kids, hosted by Mill Neck Foundation, invites children ages 8 to 16 to learn a new language and have fun this summer. Held on the campus of Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, the camp teaches beginning sign language in an enjoyable and unique way. In two sessions, July 11-15 and July 18-22, campers are divided by age (ages 8-12 and 13-16). Through activities, games and arts and crafts, campers are taught the sign language alphabet, numbers, signs for animals, foods, colors and more. Campers in session one will have basic conversations in sign by the end of the camp and those with a prior knowledge in session two will build on their current skills and focus on conversational sign. Session one campers are encouraged to return for the second week for additional fun and educational activities. At the end of each week, a special presentation will be held for friends and family. Interaction with deaf children and adults is an important part of the Sign Camp experience. Students will join campers during games, storytelling and lunch breaks. Classes are led by deaf instructors with hearing teacher assistance. Camp is held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily and costs $345 per week for each child (includes lunch, a sign language book, arts and crafts, a work journal, a bag and more).
