Several people were killed and dozens injured when an intense storm hit Belgium music festival, Pukkelpop, and collapsed a stage.
Rain, hail and strong winds made for a deadly combination as the storm tore through the festival, taking down a tent, towers, stage equipments, and a tree.
Fox explains that the indie-band, Smith Westerns, was set to perform on the stage when it collapsed just moments before. The main stage also had a covering that fell and almost hit the band.
The festival is now postponed and its crowd of 60,000 have evacuated the premises. The music festival was supposed to generate performances from the Foo Fighters, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Wiz Khalifa, and Panic! At the Disco.
The bands that were supposed to perform tweeted about the weather conditions and the disasters that struck while videos surfaced showing torrential downpour and fans attempting to escape the mess.
This weather tragedy is not the first of its kind. Last week a fatal stage collapse at the Indiana State fair killed five people and injured over 20 more. There has already been a fund set up for the victims that has accumulated $60,000 so far, notes IBJ.
Pukkelpop is a three day festival that began on Thursday and is one of Belgium’s biggest alternative open-air festivals. It takes place near Hasselt and houses 200 performing acts on eight different stages.
