It’s August, and it’s hotter than hot, and sticky and going to an upscale event seems like the worst possible idea of a glamourous evening. But it’s your best friend’s sister’s anniversary party and you can’t ditch out– as much as you’d like to– for an air conditioned night at the movies. So you head to your makeup table, trying to work magic in hopes that your face won’t end up on the floor by the end of the night.

Lucky for you, M.A.C Cosmetics Senior Artist, Tiffany Johnston is here (via email correspondence) to help and give some much needed advice on summer makeup wearing and what M.A.C products to invest in.

On a hot day and event attendance is a must, Johnston says to focus on your features.

“Try wearing more mascara for extra fluffy lashes. M·A·C Cosmetics Pro Lash in Splashproof stays put,” she said. “Get daring with a bold lip. My favorite for Spring and Summer is M·A·C Cosmetics Lipstick in Morange. It’s more matte in texture so it wears longer and there is far less chance of feathering.”

We all know some of us just cannot forgo the “mucho” makeup, and it lasting all night long seems like only a wish the fairy godmothers could grant. In this case, Johnston says think textures and reconsider the concealer.

If you can’t escape the makeup layers for your special event on a hot day keep in mind textures. What does your foundation claim? If it’s hydrating it may be too slippery to set to your skin. I love M·A·C Cosmetics Studio Fix Fluid Foundation, it gives great coverage and sets to a matte finish,” said Johnston. “This way I can think twice about concealer and powder, do you really need them? If you’re oily keep M·A·C Cosmetics Blot Film on hand. They absorb excess oil from the surface of your skin without disturbing your makeup too much. Do this step before touching up with powder. You’ll avoid the pancake look.”

Now, as far as looking glamourous for an event, here are some things Johnston says to keep in mind this summer.

For eyes, Johnston says silky, sheer washes of color is in.

“Think jewel tones with super subtle sheen. Grab a M·A·C Cosmetics Brush #224 and your favorite M·A·C shadow (mine for Summer is M·A·C Cosmetics Eye Shadow in Paradisco) Apply it all the way across your lid. Don’t avoid mascara… It defines your natural eye line try M·A·C Cosmetics Mascara in Haute & Naughty Lash,” advises Johnston.

For lips, the makeup expert says go for oranges, corals and reds.

“This is the Summer for a bold statement-making mouth. Don’t be shy! Wear this trend with a neutral palette on the rest of your face; try M·A·C Cosmetics Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Full Speed and M·A·C Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Good to Go,” she said.

For the face, Johnston reveals a new trend, “perfect cashmere looking skin.”

“Bronzed and sculpted in the most beautiful natural way but with intention. I always have my M·A·C Cosmetics Mineralized Skinfinish Natural on hand to sweep across cheekbones and hairline. It’s the perfect texture,” says Johnston.
