The board of trustees held a meeting Oct. 6 at Village Hall to approve Public Works contracts, block parties and other related departmental communications.
Among the contracts approved by the board were for additional underground wiring and directional drilling to be performed within the village by Island Cable Co. ($30,000). Other contracts approved were for paving work to be done by Valente Contracting Corp. ($24,375); the rental of granular activated carbon filters at Hilton Park by Philip Ross ($30,000); police headquarter renovations by FML Contracting ($59,176); and the acceptance of a maintenance bond for water main improvements on Main and Merillon Avenues performed by Roy Wanser, Inc ($338, 268.67).
The Turkey Trot Race Committee, Inc., was also approved to hold its annual Turkey Trot Race on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24), 2011. In addition, permits for block parties were granted to Kensington Road for Oct. 15, from 1 until 10 p.m., with a rain date of Oct. 22, and to Ash Street for Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. (rain date Oct. 23). At the onset of the meeting, there were no public comments made regarding the St. Paul’s restoration project or agenda items, but the board used the beginning of the evening to approve NYPD Captain Brian Reilly for volunteer work as a Garden City firefighter.
In other matters, Garden City Recreation Department head Kevin E. Ocker updated the mayor on the status of the ongoing community pool rehabilitation project. “All of the decking around the wading pool is gone and the old toddler playground has also been removed,” Ocker said. “The decking that’s going to be renovated around the adult pool is also 90 percent complete. We anticipate the actual pouring of concrete to begin next week. In the adult pool area, the trench drain itself, the stones have been removed. The trench drain has been repaired and the underground pool planking for the new pool will be going on next week. The goal really is to have as much concrete poured, if not all of the concrete poured, by the time the really cold weather sets in. We’re in a very good position at this point,” Ocker added.
Although the pool rehabilitation project was approved by the board just this past May, the improvement process is moving at a rapid pace. The project began to take shape in November 2010, when deBruin Engineering, PC and RGR Landscape Architecture prepared a conceptual design report that identified the wading pool and spray park as areas of the Garden City Community Pool in dire need of redevelopment. Over the next several months, the focus of the construction will be consolidating the locker rooms, office spaces and snack bar into a single clubhouse building.
In addition, the plan calls for the redevelopment of the circulation space that connects the adult pool, swimming pool and children’s play area. Also included in the project is the redevelopment of the deck space on the north end of the adult pool, with the goal in mind of providing better functionality and comfort.
The board of trustees will hold its next meeting Oct. 20 at Garden City’s Village Hall.
