‘The Devil Inside’ Takes No. 1 Spot in Box Office Results

It looks like low-budget demonic horror movies still know how to attract brave moviegoers into theaters—even at midnight.

Paramount Pictures’ “The Devil Inside” premiered on Friday with huge numbers despite lousy reviews from critics and a projected budget of only $1 million. Apparently, exorcisms are still in—even in 2012.

The horror flick topped the charts on Friday, earning an estimated $16 million, easily taking the No. 1 spot on Friday, blowing past other films that have been gathering dust at movie theaters across the country. And $2 million came from midnight showings, according to Entertainment Weekly.

It looks like the movie’s impressive showing on it’s opening day will be enough to push the movie past $30 million, but it’s unclear if this weekend’s momentum will carry through the rest of the month.

Critics on the popular movie website Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 7 percent overall rating and reviews were less than enthusiastic. People who’ve seen the film gave the movie a 57 percent rating.

Finishing in second on Friday was Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” with $6 million, according to estimates from Box Office Mojo. According to the website, the action movie’s domestic total is $155 million.

Coming in third was “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” with $4.2 million and “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” finished in fourth.

All three of those films that fell behind “The Devil Inside” hit theaters last month.

Here’s what the Top 5 looks like:

  • The Devil Inside
  • Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
  • Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
  • War Horse
