Over 60 … And Getting Younger: January 26, 2012

Clear the Decks!

Fourteen people are coming to our house to watch the football game. Can everybody fit into our tiny den? Can everybody see the screen? Can everybody get his/her own seat?

How about food and drink for the crowd? Beer and soda go well with football. Maybe I can make that Sangria with lemons and apples. That should be a hit for the crowd.

Salsa dip and crackers go a long way. So do assorted nuts and potato chips. Some guys like the spicy olives and some like the smooth guacamole. Everybody loves shrimp and cocktail sauce.

Everyone in the room has to get as comfortable as they can. Make sure not to block anyone’s view of the action. Find a spot where you can eat and drink without causing a good accident. Game time is approaching – don’t get nervous.

We are all sure of one thing. We all love Eli Manning! He is a country boy who has captured the Big Apple. His “aw shucks” kind of personality reminds me of Gary Cooper as “Sergeant York” many years ago. He also can throw an accurate spiral pass to his group of sure-handed ends and backs. That included Cruz, Manningham, Nicks, Bradshaw, Jacobs and others.

Then the huge question!

When do we serve the chicken from Zorns? Let’s do it at halftime. The game was tied 10-10 at halftime. Eat quickly and get back to the TV set. That’s the game plan.

The Giants win! – the Giants win!

Happiness and kissing all over the house.

And then I get serious. I stated somberly, “In two weeks on a Superbowl Sunday I want everybody back in this house. Sit in the exact seats you occupy now. We can’t afford to change. We don’t want to jinx our beloved Giants.”

Everybody went home happy and bloated from the food.
