Eleventh Anniversary of Herricks Lunar New Year Celebration
Come celebrate at Herricks High School, 100 Shelter Rock Road, New Hyde Park between 7 and 10 p.m. the 11th anniversary of the Herricks Lunar New Year. (The Year of The Dragon) (Snow date: March 3, 2012) Free admission includes: Lion Dance, Chinese Yo-Yo, sing-a-long, drama performance, men’s choir, drum dance, Asian Cuisine, arts & crafts, guest performance, raffles. There will be an open table tennis tournament from 3 to 5:30 p.m. with walk-in registration. Hosted by the Asian American Cultural Club and sponsored by CAANH (The Chinese American Association of North Hempstead at www.caanhli.org).
Valentine’s Dance
The Irish American Center, 297 Willis Avenue, Mineola, will hold its Annual Valentine’s Dance featuring the Tommy Mulvihill Band at 8:30 p.m.
Debbie and Friends presents “Story Songs”
At Long Island Children’s Museum on Saturday, February 11 at 1 and 3 p.m. Debbie and Friends are back by popular demand to present a fun concert for the whole family. You’ll become the Big Bad Wolf and blow the house down and Jack climbing the beanstalk. Fix Rosie’s wrong rhymes, test your skills with the “Simon Sez Song” and share a special moment with your loved ones singing Love Is a Family. Ages: 3 and up. The Culture of Chocolate at LICM
At 3 p.m. the word chocolate is said to be derived from the Mayan word for a popular drink, xocoatl. This was made with cacao beans, water and different spices. Come discover the historic source of the world’s enjoyment of chocolate as we learn more about the Mayans by listening to stories of their culture and tasting variations of ancient recipes. Ingredients: corn, dairy and spices Ages: 5 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).

Christ Lutheran Church to Hold Vocal Recital
At 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Christ Lutheran Church, 300 Hillside Drive South, in New Hyde Park, approximately 10 children from Queens and Nassau County will be singing for family and friends in a recital organized by their vocal teacher, Kim Larkin.

Legislator Judi Bosworth to Hold Workshop on Property Assessment
Nassau County Legislator Judi Bosworth invites you to learn about the process of property valuation and how to file an appeal of the assessed value of your property if you disagree with your most recent assessment. She will hold free sessions in the area. A representative from the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission will be available at the sessions to give further information about assessment and answer any questions you may have. Remember the excitement of making a wish as you blew out your birthday candles? Remember the sparkle it brought to your parents eyes? Now it’s your turn to help make those same special memories for children whose parents have to struggle with the dilemma of food or having a birthday party. In honor of LICM’s 10th “Birthday on the Block,” we’re partnering with Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank to help gather birthday party items for families in need. Again on Feb. 26. Here are some suggestions: Candles, Cake Mix & Frosting. Party Hats, Goodie Bags and Party Favors, Balloons, Gift Wrap, Disposable Cake Pan, Paper goods. Be sure to put all the items in a fun birthday bag! Items must be new. All kid friendly foods are welcomed as well. The LICM will be collecting the items from February 18-26 in the Outer Lobby of the museum, 11 Davis Avenue Garden City.

On Sunday, February 19 at 3 p.m., Temple Emanuel of Great Neck will present “Courting the Jester,” Robert Spiotto’s Musical Tribute to Danny Kaye. Multi-talented Bob Spiotto sings and dances in a non-stop overview of Kaye’s life, told with energy and humor. Come and see him in this 90-minute tour-de-farce with musical direction and accompaniment by Peter A. Pece. Tickets are $10/Adult with discounts for students and seniors. The Irish American Society of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, Inc. will hold a Grand Marshal and Aides Dinner Dance at 297 Willis Avenue, Mineola to begin at 5 p.m. Grand marshal Betty McLoughlin along with aides Mary Coyne, Jeff Clark, Aileen Scott and Sean Treanor will be honored. TNH Hosts Annual Polar Plunge to Benefit Special Olympics
Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board invite all residents to join the hundreds of other brave souls who will dive into the frigid waters at North Hempstead Beach Park for 8th annual Polar Plunge. Sponsored by the Special Olympics, the “Freezin’ for a Reason” Polar Plunge will be held at North Hempstead Beach Park on March 3rd. Registration will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and the Plunge will start at noon. “Besides being a great event to socialize with family, friends and neighbors and engage in friendly and fun rivalry, the Annual Polar Plunge gives everyone the opportunity to raise funds for a worthy cause,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said. “I look forward to seeing you there.” In addition to Supervisor Kaiman, plungers will also include State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, Special Olympics athletes, students from local universities and high schools, as well as members of the community.
