The champion of last season’s American Idol, Scotty McCreery, clearly wasn’t headed for a win at his high school baseball game when he was hit with a ball.

McCreery was pitching for Garner High School Trojans on Thursday in the third inning against East Wake High School when the batter hit a shot right at him. The ball took one hop and hit the American Idol star in the throat.

While fans crossed their fingers that no damage was done to his award-winning vocal chords,  spokeswoman Beverly Keel of Universal Music Group in Nashville revealed McCreery wasn’t seriously injured.

Since the hit reportedly did no damage, McCreery picked up the ball, threw the batter out and finished the game like the champion that he is. According to The Associated Press, McCreery pitched a little over four innings and struck out six batters.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for Garner High School to win. The team lost the game 3-2.

According to Z6Mag.com,  Derik Goffena, the team’s coach later commented on the incident. “He has been throwing very well and will continue to help our rotation,” the coach was quoted as saying. “He took a grounder to the chin, but is OK. Scared him more than anything.”

Last year, McCreery reportedly missed the baseball season for American Idol, which proved to be a good choice as he won season 10 of the competition show.

Last spring, he took home the win at just 16 years old after captivating America with his impressive vocals all season.  Lauren Alaina was named the runner up, which marked the first time two country kids, both 16 years old, took the top spots on the show.

According to reports, McCreery graduates high school in June and will go on to join Brad Paisley on tour before heading to college in the fall.
