“I appreciate a slow-burn romance,” Emily Blunt said to ReadingEagle.com. “In most movies everyone is just tearing their clothes off in the first scene. Let that chemistry burn!”
Blunt, 29, is taking her acting career to a new level this Spring. You may know her best as the rigid assistant to Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada,” but Blunt excels as the lovable “girl-next-door” character. She is staring in two romantic movies, “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” and “The Five-Year Engagement” and the romances in both of the movies do not burn “excessively rapid,” she explains in a phone interview with ReadingEagle.com.
In “The Five-Year Engagement,” the British native plays Violet Barnes. Her story is happy in the beginning until her lovely boyfriend Tom Solomon, played by Jason Segel, decides to make all her dreams comes true and propose to her. All the excitement begins as a short engagement eventually turns into a grueling five years.
“It’s very funny and a lot bawdier than many romantic comedies,” Blunt said. “It’s closing in on ‘When Harry Met Sally’ (1989), but racier.”
The couple must keep delaying their wedding due to various reasons and moviegoers get a peak at the complexities of Violet and Tom’s relationship, and how it changes and evolves over the years.
“A lot of people have come out of early screenings and have told me, ‘It’s so true to life.’ ”
Blunt has gone through her own engagement process after marrying actor John Krasinski of “The Office,” in 2010. She admitted that she doesn’t like long ones.
“Personally I’m an advocate for short engagements,” she said, laughing. “Long sometimes means that there is a reason for it. Two years engaged and no wedding? I’d be upset!”
