Mint Julep Recipes to Celebrate Kentucky Derby

This year’s Kentucky Derby was full of excitement, so what better way to celebrate an American past time then with an awesome American drink? That’s where Mint Julep comes into play!

It’s pretty much just a bourbon slush, the Boston Herald explains, and American’s are pretty fund of slushies. Just added some bourbon, simple syrup and mint leaves to crushed ice and you have the perfect refreshing drink.

Great beer writer Lew Bryson once said “the mint julep is one of the most wonderful booze confections known to drinking man.”

Julep Bar’s Mint Julep 

Leaves from 4-5 mint sprigs
1/2 oz simple syrup
2½ oz. bourbon
Another mint sprig for garnish
Put the mint and simple syrup into a silver julep cup. Muddle the two together so the sugar is dissolved. The will also help to release the oil and aroma of the mint. Next add the bourbon. Fill the cup with crushed ice and stir until the glass begins to get frosty and garnish with a mint sprig. It’s the perfect serving for one!

Drink’s Classic Mint Julep
Plenty of fresh mint
Crushed ice
½ oz. simple syrup
¾ oz. Old Fitzgerald or Eagle Dear bourbon
Shaved ice

Add about three to six leaves to the bottom of a julep mug, you can also use a tumbler. Make sure to muddle the leaves. Fill three quarters of the container (julep mug of tumbler) with crushed ice. Next to can add the simple syrup and bourbon. Being careful not to tear the mint, use a spoon to mix all the ingredients. Top it off with some extra crushed ice and a few mint sprigs. Let the drink sit for a few minutes until it begins to frost. Serving size is for one.
