Two Herricks High School Science Research students competed and won first place awards in the second round of the recent 2013 Charles Duggan Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. These students will now compete on the international level at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in Phoenix Arizona from May 11-18.
The Intel ISEF is considered to be the Olympics of science competitions and brings more than 1,300 students from the United States and forty nations together to compete for scholarships, grants, internships and a trip to attend the Nobel Prize ceremonies.
Senior Benjamin Pleat won the first place award in the Earth and Planetary Sciences category with his research project entitled: “A Novel Approach to Locating Geothermal Systems in Relation to Geodetic Crustal Deformation and Strain Rate Tensors.” Pleat is the son of Yelena and Marvin Pleat of Roslyn. He has previously been recognized as an Intel Science and Talent Search semifinalist.
Sophomore ByeongHo (Ben) Jung and his partner from Manhasset High School won the first place award in the Environmental Science category for their project entitled, “A Novel Method for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Using 937 and COLO320DM Cell Lines to Propose a Pathway by which Environmental Toxin 4-Nonylphenol May Promote and Inflammatory Response.” Jung is the son of Soon Yong Yun and Chan Yi Jung of Albertson.
Teacher Renée Barcia mentored both students.
