Baylis Elementary students in the string orchestra, concert band, jazz band and chorus put on a recent spring concert.
At Baylis, there are approximately 120 students involved in the various bands, which include more than a dozen instruments, and almost 100 students involved in chorus. Baylis has 60 NYSSMA soloists that are included in its music program.
The string orchestra, which featured students in third, fourth and fifth grades opened the night. Principal Lisa Greiner joined the orchestra to perform Pachelbel’s Canon in D, and the orchestra ended its performance with Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.”
Next, Ms. Tauches’ third grade chorus included a sign language enhanced version of “Peace I Leave with You” and “Shake the Papaya Down.”
Ms. Chiarello took the stage with the concert band, where from horns and trumpets, to flutes and clarinets, the children continued to awe the audience. They played “Monmouth March,” “Dancing the Skies,” “Sabre Dance” and then ended with Katy Perry’s “Firework.”
The jazz band followed with several tunes including the James Bond theme.
The fourth and fifth grade chorus, under the direction of Ms. Lasky, ended the night with moving renditions of “Let All Nations Sing,” “Homeward Bound,” and concluded with “Shine a Little Light,” which included several soloists.
