Eamonn Lennon of New Hyde Park held his Eagle Court of Honor on Sept. 22, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor.
For his Eagle Scout Project, Lennon supervised and completed renovations at Holy Spirit Church with the help of family, friends, troop members and community members. The project consisted of sanding, staining and varnishing the front doors, painting 150 feet of black railing, two plaques, and the church lobby.
“I would like to thank all the Scouts, friends, family members and Scout leaders who helped with my project,” he said. “I also would like to thank Mr. Murano and Father Joe for believing in me and giving me permission to do this. I want to thank Noreen the church secretary, Cappy’s Paint and the church parishioners.”
Lennon joined Cub Scout Pack 489 out of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in first-grade and has been a member of Scouting ever since. Lennon progressed through the ranks of Cub Scouts and earned his Arrow of Light Award, the highest award a Cub Scout can earn. In February 2007, he bridged into Troop 298 of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in the fifth grade.
“Thank you to each and every one of you for coming to my Eagle court of honor,” Lennon said. “I am very proud to tell all of you of my life as a Scout. It wasn’t all easy to get to this point.”
He has held various leadership positions in Troop 298, including patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, troop historian and chaplain aide. Lennon also serves Pack 489 with Blue and Gold Slide Shows and Troop 298 with Holiday slide shows for the past six years.
Lennon has spent many hours camping with the troop and has spent numerous summers at summer camp learning how to camp, cook, tie knots and even survive in the wilderness. He has never missed a summer camp trip in seven years.
Lennon has completed two high adventure trips; in 2011 he explored the Florida Keys at Sea Base with Troop 298 snorkeling, boating and touring the Keys. This summer he hiked 75 miles through mountains of New Mexico at the Philmont Scout Ranch with his Dad and the Theodore Roosevelt Council Crew 723-P-1.
“I got to be honest; I didn’t like it at all at the time but at the same time I am thankful for my parents pushing me to do this,” said Lennon. “I really enjoyed working on all my merit badges and I would feel really good when they were completed.”
His crew successfully climbed Baldy Mountain, the highest point of Philmont, over 12,000 feet; he also experienced water rafting, rock climbing, black powder rifle and much more. Eamonn plans on attending the last of the triple crown high adventure trips next year at Northern Tier in the lakes of Minnesota.
Eamonn completed his ordeal in 2012 to become a member of the Order of the Arrow (which is the honor society of Boy Scouts) and in 2013 he was inducted into the Brotherhood. Last year, Eamonn also joined Venture Crew 333.
Eamonn is a senior at New Hyde Park Memorial High School and plans to go to college, majoring in video editing and film production. Eamonn’s other passion is music and he loves to play his fiddle and spin records. Lennon also owns his own DJ business. He plans on staying active in Scouting.
